A star drawn with points is a drawing of glare, not of a star. Light from a source far enough away to be a point spreads into spikes as it passes the edges of an aperture — an eyelash, an iris, the blades of a lens. The spikes belong to the eye that looks. Every culture that drew stars this way was drawing its own optics.
