A leaf is a solar panel with a plumbing problem, and the veins are the solution — a central rib carrying water in and sugar out, branching until no cell is far from a supply. The branching angles are not decoration. They sit close to the cheapest arrangement for reaching every part of an area with the least total length of pipe.
