A colour takes on its company
Every bar is the same orange. Woven between yellow stripes it looks more yellow; between blue stripes, redder. Instead of standing out against its neighbours, as in the plain contrast effects, a colour in fine stripes is pulled towards them — this is called assimilation.
Christoph Munker described it in the 1970s as a colour version of the effect Michael White later made famous in grey. It is one reason a thread can look quite different in the cloth than it did on the spool.
