Edges that lean

Every grey line is perfectly level. The slope comes from the corners where a dark tile on one side of the mortar meets a light tile on the other: each of those small light-to-dark steps reads as a tiny tilted edge, and because the rows are offset, the tilts along one line all lean the same way and add up into a slope.

It needs the mortar to be a grey between the black and the white, and the tiles to be offset; swap black and white for two colours of equal brightness and it disappears. The pattern was described by Hugo Münsterberg in 1894 and named in 1973 by Richard Gregory, after the tiled wall of a café at the bottom of St Michael’s Hill in Bristol.
