· About today’s shape
The heart symbol has almost nothing to do with the organ. It appears in European manuscripts around the thirteenth century, well before anyone had drawn a human heart accurately, and its likeliest ancestors are ivy and fig leaves — the medieval shorthand for constancy. By the time anatomy caught up, the shape had a job of its own and kept it.
