· About today’s shape
A crescent is one circle with another taken out of it, and that is nearly the truth. The moon is always a full sphere and half of it is always lit; the phase is only how much of the lit half happens to face us. The dark part is not the Earth's shadow. It is simply the side that is looking away from the sun.
