What is drawn here is a cut, not a stone. The brilliant cut was worked out to send light that enters the top back out through the top again: fifty-seven facets at angles chosen so that a ray striking the underside is reflected rather than passed through. Miss those angles by a couple of degrees and the light leaves through the bottom, and the stone goes dead.
